What is Low E or Pilkington K Glass™?

Low-emission and Pilkington K Glass™is known as Low E Glass. The glass has applied on inside double glazing, a microscopically-thin coating of metal oxide or silver. This allows the sun's heat and light to pass through the glass into the building, while at the same time it blocking heat from leaving the room, reducing heat loss considerably. The glass is clear in appearance and very difficult to detect without a special meter.

Since the Kyoto protocol, which has limited C02 emissions, and legislation for energy efficient glass, Low E glazing is mandatory in some European counties.

This legislation requires all new glazing to be low emissive. This effects glazing in Germany, UK, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, and many other European countries.

In the United Kingdom all orders for double glazing installed after 1st July 2002 must be Low E.
